Every day around 5 p.m., I get excited because I know my Mom and Dad will be home soon. I run to the window and sit there happily, waiting for their cars to drive up.
Wanna know how I know?
Is it because I can hear your car long before you turn onto the block?
Is it because I’ve learned how to tell time?
While I do have excellent hearing and I am VERY smart (obviously), that’s not it.
Researchers have recently discovered that it’s actually my amazing sense of smell that clues me in when you’re on your way.
You see, my nose is kind of a big deal. I can smell anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 times better than humans (no offense).
My Mom and Dad each have their own unique scents, and over time, I’ve figured out that when their smells in the house start to fade because they’ve been gone all day, that means they’ll be back soon.
Dogs like me also pick up on other clues, like changes in the light or little shifts in the daily routine around the house. We’re always paying attention.
Pretty cool, right? There’s no question about it, we dogs are intuitive and clever!
Now, what really throws me off (in the best way) is when my Mom or Dad breaks the pattern and comes home randomly in the middle of the day. That’s just pure magic. 10/10 surprise.
One thing’s for sure… no matter what time it is, I’m always thrilled when you walk through that door.
Missing you always,
Nova the Husky
