Hi, I’m Ryan Reynolds the Dog. People often wonder if dogs really smile. The answer is… sort of 😊
We dogs are quick learners. We notice that our humans smile when they’re happy, so sometimes we try to mirror that expression to show we’re happy, too. When my mom and dad are in a good mood, I like to copy their energy! It makes them smile even more!
Now, I don’t smile exactly the way humans do. When I’m relaxed and comfortable, I open my mouth and pant a little. That’s my way of saying, “Everything’s cool here.” It’s not a grin in the human sense, but it’s called a “submissive grin” or a “relaxed open mouth.” Basically, it tells everyone I’m feeling calm, not stressed, and definitely not aggressive.
There are other ways to tell when I’m happy (which, let’s be honest, is most of the time). I wag my tail, come in for some sniffs, or flop down on my side or back in a posture that says, “Pet me, please.” It’s very effective. 🐶♥️
So, do we smile because we’re thinking deep, happy thoughts like you do? Not exactly. But we definitely make facial expressions that look like smiles, and in my case, they usually mean I’m feeling pure, tail-wagging joy.
