People often seem confused about why I sniff around so much. Without fail, I’ll lean in for a whiff, and they either giggle or shoo me away like I’ve committed some kind of social faux paw.
Since sniffing is such a big part of my life, I thought I’d break it down for you.
Much like my impressive physique, my nose is a powerful tool. In fact, a dog’s nose is said to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human’s. That means while you’re out there smelling “dinner,” I’m detecting what spices you used and how long it’s been cooking.
As an Anatolian Shepherd, my sense of smell is especially strong. My ancestors were bred to guard livestock in the mountains of Turkey, which means I can smell predators before they’re visible, detect intruders from far away, and track movement around my territory—even if it’s just the mail carrier bringing suspicious packages again.
Let me tell you—that’s a lot of sniffing power. I can smell things humans don’t even know exist.
Here are a few examples:
Your Signature Smell
Every human and animal has a unique scent. I can identify you by your smell as precisely as a fingerprint.
Where You’ve Been
Everywhere you go, you pick up scents. I can tell where you’ve been—and who you’ve been hanging out with. (No judgment… unless it was the neighbor’s cat.)
How You’re Feeling
I can sense how you’re doing just by your scent. Dogs like me can smell hormonal changes, stress-related chemicals like cortisol, and even illness. So if I nuzzle up to you, it might not just be affection—it might be because I can tell you need a little extra love. Or snacks. Probably both.
Your Health
You’ve probably heard of dogs trained to support or protect humans. But did you know we can also be trained to detect conditions like diabetes, seizures, and even certain cancers—all just by smell? Pretty impressive, right? I should really add “health consultant” to my resume.
So, the next time I—or any other dog—give you a sniff, don’t shoo us away. Remember, it’s our way of checking in and making sure you’re OK.
It’s like we’re saying, “Hi! Tell me about your day. How are you feeling? And also, is that turkey I smell?”
