By Nova the Husky
As a breed, we Huskies are known for having a lot of personality!
Along with my striking good looks, I’m pretty independent. I’m definitely a girl who knows what she wants, and what she doesn’t want.
I’m high-energy, love to play, and I’m always smiling.
We Huskies are also known for being extremely loyal. We make great family dogs and tend to be very protective of our loved ones.
That’s me in a nutshell!
But not every Husky trait fits perfectly in every situation. For example, I can get pretty anxious around strangers, especially if they come inside my house unexpectedly.
Why? Because I feel like it’s my job to protect my pack. When someone enters our den (aka the house), I don’t know if they’re here to say hi or steal my toys. Or worse… eat our food! You never know. I say, better safe than sorry.
Here’s the thing: I actually like meeting new people! It’s just that I feel a little torn. I want to hang out and have fun, but at the same time, they make me nervous. It’s confusing and stressful.
So here are a few things that could help me feel more at ease:
Let’s Meet Outside First
Start by meeting me outside — on the driveway is perfect. I’ll be on a leash, and the strangers should be too (just kidding… kind of). Being outside gives me a chance to sniff things out in a neutral space, which helps me feel more comfortable.
Please Don’t Reach Out
I know humans are told to stick out a hand so a dog can sniff it, but honestly? That just makes me nervous. I don’t know what that hand is planning to do, and it feels like too much, too soon. The best thing you can do is let me be. I’ll come over and check you out when I’m ready.
Treats, please!
I really like treats. Maybe my mom could give me one on the driveway, and after a little while, once I’ve had time to get comfortable, the strangers could give me one too. I know that sounds a little self-serving, but hey, treats help!
Keep me close.
When we go inside, it helps if my mom keeps me on a leash by her side. That way, I feel safe and supported.
Let me retreat to my room.
After some time, my mom can take me to my room, where my bed, toys, and food are. I like it there. It’s quiet and familiar, and it helps me calm down.
I hope this post helps you understand me better. I really do enjoy meeting new people. I just need a little extra time and space to feel safe.
And furry friends? They’re always welcome!
Paws out,
Nova the Husky 🐾
