🐾 Are Dogs Really Descended from Wolves?

Hi, it’s me, your friend Nova the Siberian Husky. Since I look a little like a wolf, a lot of people ask us if dogs are descended from wolves.

Great question! After all, I am quite wild and beautiful looking (At least that’s what my mom says. And she’s very smart.).

The short answer? Yes, technically, we are descended from a now-extinct population of gray wolves. But that was a very long time ago.

Somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago (before treats and belly rubs) some gray wolves began hanging around humans. They probably figured out it was easier to beg for scraps than to hunt and fight for food.

The friendliest wolves (the ones who didn’t growl at every shadow) got extra snacks. And the humans? They got protection, loyalty, and eventually, companionship.

Over time, those wolves evolved into an entirely separate species: Canis lupus familiaris (a.k.a. domestic dogs).

While dogs share 99.9% of our DNA with wolves, we behave very differently. We’re more social, more trainable, and deeply emotionally connected to humans. We’re sort of like very, very distant cousins.

Here are a few of the big differences:

  • Wolves hunted for food. I give my mom big blue puppy-dog eyes until she fills my bowl.
  • Wolves roamed hundreds of miles through the wild and defended themselves from predators. Wild for me means my fenced-in backyard. Predators? Squirrels and Amazon delivery drivers.
  • Wolves lived in dens, like caves or nooks in the wild, and traveled in packs. I live in an air-conditioned house, sleep on the couch, and am waited on hand and paw.

There are other differences too, but I’m sure you get the idea.

Yes, dogs came from wolves. But I’ve evolved… into a total princess.

Paws out, Nova 🐾
